Here Comes Everybody

An Interdisciplinary Conference and Festival on
Cage's Contributions to Twentieth Century Culture

Presented by the Mills College Music Department
and the Center for Contemporary Music

A CONCERT SERIES
devoted to Cage's music, an exhibition of Cage's art in the Mills College Art Gallery, and films about Cage.

THE PRINCIPAL FOCUS
is a five day conference with presentations by scholars and creative artists from around the world. The conference will provide a scholarly forum for an examination of Cage's work; scholars from a variety of fields will be on hand and there will be many chances for interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange.

THE CONFERENCE CONSISTS
of panel discussions as well as paper presentations. Sessions focus on specific aesthetic and technical issues as well as Cage's position within a broad historical and cultural context. Lou Harrison will present the keynote address.

THE CONCERT SERIES INCLUDES
works from the entire range of Cage's creative output, from his early works for percussion ensemble and prepared piano, to several works written just before his death. Members of the Center for Contemporary Music perform live electronic works from Cage's first experiments with this medium to several newer compositions. Guest artists include Marianne Amacher, The Hub, Joseph Kubera, and Gordon Mumma.

AN EXCLUSIVE SCREENING
of One11 and 103, Cage's extraordinary collaboration with filmmaker Peter Lohner, and From Zero, four films about Cage by Andrew Culver and Frank Scheffer, reveal another aspect of Cage's artistic accomplishments.

THE MILLS COLLEGE ART GALLERY
presents The Architecture of Chance, an exhibition of John Cage's prints, from November 15 - December 30. The exhibition, curated by Constance Lewallen, features a series of prints and archival material, inculding some of Cage's original notes and drawings lent by Crown Point Press.

MILLS COLLEGE IS LOCATED
on a beautiful campus at the foot of Oakland's East Bay Hills. The College's history is closely interconnected with Cage. In the 1930s, Henry Cowell and Lou Harrison taught at Mills and Cage worked here as an accompanist for the dance department. The presence of these outstanding creative artists at Mills gave rise to a rich experimentalist tradition that continued through serveral generations of composers and still flourishes today.
