David Hykes
Windhorse Riders

Composer, singer, music and meditation teacher, workshop and retreat leader, lecturer and writer, David Hykes was born in Taos, New Mexico, in 1953. Founder of the Harmonic Presence Foundation, on Sept. 11, 1981, he founded the group "David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir," the western world's oldest and pre-eminent overtone ensemble, in New York in 1975. Founder of the Harmonic Chant, a universal music based on the harmonics of sound and just intonation, which opens many new directions beyond the 'throat-singing' traditions of Central Asia. Worldwide concerts since 1982. USA, Australia, Japan, Europe, Scandanavia... Artist-in-Residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC, 1979-1989; first-ever joint concerts and symposia with the Gyuto and Gyume Tibetan monks, and with the Dalai Lama (Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC, 1985, 1986; East West Foundation, Los Angeles, 1989).

Grants and Awards: Flying Elephants Foundation/Ashes and Snow, $50,000 (2005), Rockefeller Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, UNESCO, New York State Council on the Arts, Threshold Fondation, ZBS Foundation, Asian Cultural Council, French Ministry of Culture.

Directs a music and meditation retreat center in a large restored 12th century Cistercian site in the forest near Autainville, France, about 90 minutes southwest of Paris. Teaches and performs throughout the USA (see www.harmonicpresnce.org).

He has released 10 CDs of his music, and has contributed Harmonic Chant compositions to a number of sacred art films, including the recent Vajra Sky Over Tibet, endorsed by the Dalai Lama, and Travellers and Magicians, the feature film by incarnate lama Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche (Khyentse Norbu), in addition to composing and perfomring music for Dead Poets Society, Ghost, Meetings with Remarkable Men, Jacob's Ladder, Baraka and many other films.

His recording Hearing Solar Winds, which single-handedly established the modern vocal harmonic and 'healing sounds' movements, is the best selling overtone CD of all time, having sold some 300,000 copies.

His New Albion recordings chronicle his expanded vision of harmonic presence in musical sound to include harmonic proportion not just in the overtone realms, where he exercises a unique mastery, but also in the creation of harmonic modes (just intonation) and the 'subharmonic' realms of tempo and rhythm, including the Harmonic Rhythm keyboard he invented to play hamonic polyrhythms as just intonation chords.

His vision of harmonic presence as a global, universal aspect of musical sound relevant to all octaves of musical expression, his unique technical mastery of the new techniques of Harmonic Chant, and the intesnity of his meditative focus and artistic vision are what make his work unique. David Hykes has opened a new dimension in music; he has in fact brought us the music of the spheres, the music which is dominated by overtones, by proportions and multiplications which hold through the universe and govern all spatial and mathematical relationships. As music, these sounds retain an extraordinary mystery. It is a wondrous sound, which would, as I always say, be appropriate to landing on the moon or Mars for it does not belong to man; it has not be worked by him and must make every listener feel humble and yet part of the great system. The Harmonic Presence Foundation, with charitable status, offers concerts, seminars, retreats, school and conservatory lectures and residencies in countries all over the world and is, therefore, spreading a form of knowledge which joins the sciences at their most intangible level, where what appears as matter turns out to be energy. Finally, this music which David Hykes brings us, the harmonic series, as he says, being the musical DNA, the source of the music we know, which gives us life, also provides an extraordinary « Genesis Chapter » for musical education at all levels.

—Yehudi Menuhin, November, 1998
