Violin Concerto Trilogy
Founded in 1985, Third Angle has become a primary creative force in the cultural landscape of Portland and the Pacific Northwest; its aim is to commission, premiere, and record new works by regional and nationally recognized composers, and to perform innovative music by the established composers of the twentieth and twenty-first century. Since its inception, Third Angle has presented over 90 programs of contemporary music, commissioned over twenty new works, and released five recordings to critical acclaim.
The ensemble maintains a roster of nine permanent musicians and a revolving roster of distinguished guest artists. Third Angle consistently features the very best players from top performing institutions in Portland, including the Oregon Symphony, Florestan Trio, and Chamber Music Northwest. Third Angle presents three to five new programs with ten to fourteen total performances annually in the metropolitan Portland area and throughout the Pacific Northwest. In addition to its active concert schedule, the ensemble focuses on recording projects for release on internationally distributed labels. It also enjoys a long and continuing history of radio broadcasts at the regional (OPB and KBPS), national (NPR's Performance Today), and international levels (Art of the States through WGBH-Radio).
Third Angle's mission is to commission, perform, and record (for radio and compact disc) works by regionally and nationally recognized composers, as well as a broad range of music by the most prominent composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Third Angle is committed to the following objectives: to create and present musical events, works, and collaborations that reflect the highest artistic expressions of our time; to instigate a creative dialogue through the works and artists that we present; and to reinforce the necessity for the voice of the living composer in our cultural heritage. In particular, Third Angle is a steadfast supporter and presenter of works by regional composers, which has strongly established a Northwest creative presence at the national level.
